The Rankin family appears to have fled from Scotland to Ireland before coming to America. A branch of the family settled in
Ripley, Ohio, where Rev. John Rankin founded the "Underground Railroad" which helped slaves in Kentucky and other states escape
north. Other descendants settled in California.
